LifeSketch: Gustave Charles McDonald, or Gus as his friends knew him, was born 19 November 1888, in Hooper, Utah. He was the son of John Taylor and Catherine "Kate"; Zacher McDonald. His father and grandparents, Edward McDonald heard the Gospel in Scotland and soon immigrated to Utah in May 1866. Gus' father died on 21 May 1902 at Roy Utah of a heart attract, when Gus was 13 years old. Gus was very good to his mother and helped with the children, and when he became older he took care of the farm. He married Bertha Cook, 14 December 1910, in the Salt Lake Temple, then after his marriage he still stayed and took care of his mother's farm for a few years and then he bought a home in Syracuse, Utah. On 3 January 1918, he moved to Idaho and settled in Ammon, where he was engaged in farming. Gus and Bertha worked very hard and through their never tiring efforts they soon had a very fine home. He was very active in the LDS Church of the Ammon Ward, being a High Priest and Genealogical Worker, his religion was an every day religion, believing to do unto others as he would have them do unto him or as the comment "Love thy neighbor as thyself". He was the father of three sons and two daughters. He had a strong testimony of the Gospel and was willing to send his three sons on missions, showing the cooperation in his home, and in the service of his country. His son Dale was wounded during World War II, and received a Medical Discharge. Gus had a calm sunny disposition and met troubles as they came. Gus' soul aim was his wife and family, and with their cooperation they all lived happy together. (Based on the "Life of Gus McDonald" given by J. W. Telford at Gus' funeral service on 21 June 1945.)to his brother-in-law Earl Cook. As he slumped over from the heart attack, he asked Earl to take care of Bertha and the family. t;[Brother Gus] was one of God's choice sons. Because he filled the requirements by being an honest industrious man, a loving father and a good husband...I think that one of his greatest gifts was, 'that he made friends'. All I have to do is point to this congregation today, to do honor to their neighbors and friends. It is filled to capacity. Even the back room is filled and many standing on the outside."
