The following is a copy of a story taken from the "History of LaSalle County"
Stonemason, Denis Ryan, who worked on the construction of the warehouse building which now is the LaSalle County Historical Society Museum, is depicted wife, Jane Quinlan, in an old pen and ink sketch contributed by his great-grandson Lester Ryan of Ransom, Illinois.
Ryan was born in Clonoulty, Tipperary county, Ireland; his wife was from the neighbouring colony of Queens. They arrived in America on Dec 29, 1850, after leaving their birthplace of Nov 4 of that year.
From New York City, the stonemason and his wife walked and worked their way to Ransom, a journey encompassing two years. Learning there would be work for a stonemason, Ryan then came to Utica (Illinois) working on the canal and living on the Strawn farm.
In addition to the warehouse/museum, Ryan also helped to build the Half Way House on the bottom road near the Illinois River north of Starved Rock, and the railroad in Utica.
The Ryan's later settled in Kinsman, then returned to Ransom. Ryan, who lived from 1797-1873, and his wife now are buried in St Patrick's cemetery, Seneca, Illinois.
"From what my father, Arthur E Ryan told me, the museum building used to be a mill", Lester Ryan reports, "He and his father used to come here to visit and bring grain to to be ground. It was a three-day journey from Ransom at that time, so they only came about 2 or 3 times a year"
