Desertion, Misery Then Suicide
A Forsaken Wife Destroys Herself by Poisoning
From the Chicago Journal.
The name of Garret B. Davis was for years honorably associated with the invention and manufacture of water filters for family use in this city, but it has been sadly brought to shame within the past few months, and is now marked with the brand of infamy.
Last spring his wife visited St. Louis for the purpose of sojourning briefly with her relatives in that city, and when she returned to Chicago she brought with her a female friend, whom she took unsuspectingly into her confidence and family circle. A short time elapsed, when instigated by the spirit of evil, Davis deserted his wife and eloped with the St. Louis woman, carrying away funds and effects, so that Mrs. Davis was left destitute. In June last the guilty pair were married. So flagrant a breach of marital duty and the social statutes of the nation could not be overlooked, and Davis was arrested upon a charge of bigamy, and lodged in jail. Some friend, however, bailed him out, and we believe that he is still at large. At any rate, the case is still pending in court.
In the meantime, the deserted wife has suffered all the misery that her condition could produce. The bow of life was strung to its full tension, and last night it snapped, and the unhappy woman has passed into eternity, the victim of deliberate suicide.
On Thursday evening she called at the residence of Mr. Peter Wagner, No. 515 North Wells street, where, having an acquaintance with the lady of the house, she asked permission to remain, as she was sick and unable to return to the Hospital for Women and Children, at the corner of Indiana and Rush streets--the place where, for a week past, she had found a home. The request was kindly granted by Mrs. Wagner. Later in the night, the unfortunate woman became very ill, and medical aid was at once called, but she grew no better, and in the morning confessed that she had taken poison to end a life that had become unbearable with misery. She also repeated the story of her wrongs as stated above, at noon on Friday was at rest.
The husband is said to have recently removed to Freeport, in this State.
