Byzantine emperor Alexius I ComnenusThe Comnenus family was animportant family in the history of the Byzantine Empire.

The Comneni originated in Paphlagonia, perhaps from the Kastamonucastle, which is possibly a corruption of Castra Comnenus. TheComnenus dynasty of Byzantine emperors was founded by Isaac IComnenus, a Stratopedarch of the East under Michael VI. In 1057 Isaacled a coup against Michael and was proclaimed emperor. However, thedynasty did not come to full power until the accession of Alexius IComnenus, Isaac I's nephew, in 1081.

The Comneni were related to the Ducas and Angelus families. Alexius Imarried the grand-niece of Constantine X Ducas, a general who hadsucceeded Isaac in 1059. Their daughter Theodora married into theAngelus family; Theodora's grandsons were the emperors Isaac IIAngelus and Alexius III Angelus.

Under Alexius I and his successors the Empire was fairly prosperousand stable. Alexius moved the imperial palace to the Blachernaesection of Constantinople. Much of Anatolia was recovered from theSeljuk Turks, who had captured it just prior to Alexius' reign.Alexius also saw the First Crusade pass through Byzantine territory, leading to the establishment of the Crusader states in the east. TheComnenus dynasty was very much involved in crusader affairs, and alsointermarried with the royal families of the Principality of Antiochand the Kingdom of Jerusalem - Theodora, niece of Manuel I Comnenus, married Baldwin III of Jerusalem, and Maria, grand-niece of Manuel, married Amalric I of Jerusalem.

Remarkably, despite the general tendency for Byzantine emperors to beoverthrown after a few years, Alexius ruled for 37, and his son JohnII ruled for 25, after uncovering a conspiracy against him by hissister, the chronicler Anna Comnena, and her husband NicephorusBryennius. John's son Manuel ruled for another 37. Thereafter theComnenus dynasty fell into conspiracies and plots like many of theirancestors; Alexius II ruled for three years and his successorAndronicus I ruled for two, overthrown by the Angelus family underIsaac I. The Angeli were overthrown during the Fourth Crusade in 1204,by a relative from the Ducas family.

After the collapse of the empire in 1204, the Comneni fled back totheir homeland in Paphlagonia, and set up the Empire of Trebizond onthe Black Sea. The first emperor, also named Alexius I, was thegrandson of Andronicus I. These emperors, the "Grand Comneni," as theywere known, ruled in Trebizond for over 250 years, until DavidComnenus was defeated by the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II.

A renegade member of the Comnenus family, also named Isaac, established a separate "empire" on Cyprus in the 12th century. Theisland was taken from him by Richard I of England during the ThirdCrusade.

The Byzantine Empire was restored in 1261 by the Palaeologus dynasty.

{geni:about_me} https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Erotikos_Komnenos

He was the son of Manuel Erotikos Komnenos, an officer of Emperor Basil II who in 978 defended Nicaea against Bardas Skleros, and one of his two wives, whose names are unknown, and who on his deathbed in 1020 commended his two surviving sons Isaakios and Ioannes to the emperor's care. Basil had them carefully educated at the monastery of Stoudion, and afterwards advanced them to high official positions. He also had an older son, Nikephoros, who died in 1026, and a daughter, born in 1012 and married around 1031 to Michael Dokeianos, Captain of Italy, deceased in 1050. It is said that their name was derived from the city of Komne, near Philippopolis, where they were landowners, and that they were of Armenian ancestry from Paphlagonia, which is supported by the use of the name Manuel instead of Manolis.
The Bynzatine Empire, also called Eastern Roman Empire, was ruled by Manuel Comnenus 1st.
