Amaury was the one for whom Montfort-l'Amaury was named.

The "ford" in our name comes not from the English word for "crossing," but from the French "fort," meaning a fortress or castle, which when joined with "mul" or "mont" ("hill") means we come "from the Castle on the Hill." From Castle Montfort-l'Amaury, that is. Not from a mountain crossing, muddy crossing, sandy crossing, mill
crossing, mule crossing, mole crossing, or any other sort of crossing purported by some.
