Pincus Chaiken was just 15 years old when he left his family in the Shtetl of Slyzcs in Chenichev, Russia in 1912. He came by boat to the United States. Although records are scant, it is believed that he entered the United States at Ellis island, New York in 1912. As the story goes, the immigration officer was unable to understand Pincus's thick Russian accent. When Pincus told the officer that he was Pincus Chaiken, and that his father's name was Benjamin Chaiken, the officer misunderstood the young man. On his immigration papers, Pincus's name was recorded 'Benjamin Aiken'. For the remainder of his life, everyone in America knew him as Ben Aiken.
