Edward was the first heir apparent in English history to be proclaimed, Prince of Wales. He was a Plantagenet King of England (the House of Anjou, 8 juli 1307-20 jan 1327) whose incompetence and distaste for government finally led to his deposition and murder. In January 1327, the Parlament forced Edward to resign and proclaimed the Prince of Wales king as Edward III. On September of that year Edward II was murdered by his captors at Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire. He was allegedly homosexual, as hinted at in the film 'Braveheart'. He was also apparently somewhat ineffectual as king, which was the implication in Braveheart, as well. However, he was supposedly a strong, handsome man, well-educated and fond of the arts. Additionally, his lover was not thrown out a window by Edward I, but was instead killed by Edward II's nobles quite some time after Edward I's death. Edward II was a tragic figure, rebelled against by his wife, betrayed by his nobles, and eventually murdered, himself.

King Edward was also styled as 'Rex Angliae, Dominus Hiberniae, et Dux Aquitaine'. Edward was crowned by Henry Merewell (or Woodlock), Bishop of Winchester. One of Edward's hobbies was masonry and bricklaying. According to many historians, Edward was probably homosexual. His preference for Piers Gaveston was one of the major scandals of his reign, and cuased many problems with the nobility. He was murdered (probably by means of a hot poker inserted rectally). Portrayed by Steven Waddington in the 1991 film 'Edward II'.
