Jacob van Campen war ein Amsterdammer Kaufmann, der bei der Machtübernahme durch die Protestanten 1578 aus der Stadt ausgewiesen wurde und in Haarlem siedelte.
Grandfather Jacob van Campen 1 (nr.2) (who went to Haarlem) is probably the same Jacob van Campen that was exiled in 1585 (on the occasion of the murder on Willem van Oranje, second wave) after being ellected in the ‘vroedschap' in 1578! According to the article of Bakker on the alteration bijlage 2, that I sent you.
Haarlem was a place to go to for protestants during the catholic regime, and later for catholics, after the alteration. In Haarlem people were open minded as religion was concerned. My ancestor Gerrit Stuyver, from a catholic family, became protestant, had to flee from Amsterdam and became burgemeester van Haarlem. Gerrit and his catholic father in law and a few others (amongst them the famous Coornhert, who was then secretary of Haarlem) pleaded for complete free of religion. That was bluntly denied by Maurits, prince of Orange.
