The 1930 US Census for Ogden, Weber, Utah (dwelling & family 84) includes a Thelma K Van Alfen age 3 born Utah. Her parents were John Van Alfen age 29 born Netherlands, Holland, a printer, who immigrated 1914 and was a naturalized citizen, and his wife Renske 31 born Netherlands, Holland, who immigrated 1922. Renske was his first wife, and they had been married about 7 years (John was 22). Thelma's sibling was Gertrude 6 born UT. John owned his home, valued at $4,000 and had a radio set. A single servant girl (maid) Jan VanderPol born Holland worked for them. The 1940 US Census for Ogden, Weber, Utah (450 15th St., Family 229) includes a Thelma Van Alfen age 13 born about 1927 in Utah. Her parents were John Van Alfen age 39 born Holland, employed as a salesman, and his wife (#2?) Pauline age 40 born Holland. Thelma's siblings (all born Utah) were Gertrude 16, Pauline 8, (female) Johanne 7, Dian 5, Lucille 4 and John 3. Thelma was my step-father, Donald Lester Smith's, second wife. He married a third time in California. Perhaps Thelma died there.
