LifeSketch: Roel Alle (Ralph) Vander Meulen was born May 23, 1852 in Boornbergen, Friesland, Netherlands. He married Rigtje Sipkes Dorhout on May 18, 1877. Rigtje was born November 13, 1854 in Marrem, Groninzen, Netherlands. Together they had 8 children. Their oldest son Alle died in 1895 at the age of 17 of brain fever. They lived on a small farm. In the early 1900s their older sons Sipkes (Samuel), Dirk and Popke (Robert) came to America. They saved money to send for their parents and two younger siblings to come to America. Roel and Rigtje arrived April 8, 1908. They made the voyage from Rotterdam to New York on the ship called Noordam, leaving on March 28, 1908 it was an 11 day voyage. The trip was too much for Rigtje, who was in poor health. She died two days after her arrival in America on April 10, 1908. The passenger list shows that she died in the hospital at Ellis Island. She was buried in Lodi Cemetery in Lodi, Bergen County, New Jersey in a Dorhout family plot. Her brother Gerben Sipkes Dorhout who had settled in the area was buried in the same plot just 4 months later in August of 1908. It was a sad time for the family. Popke (Robert) met his father and two younger siblings Antje (Anna) and Alle (Ollie) and took them to Indianapolis, Indiana to the home of his oldest sister Japke (Flora) who had married a Hollander named Henry DeBoor. Roel (Ralph) tried to adjust to his new life as a widow in America, he was lonely and unhappy and after three months he decided to return to Holland with his two youngest children. He was able to move into his old home. After some time there he was unhappy and decided to once again make the voyage to America with his daughter Anna age 15 and son Alle age 11; they returned on the same ship as their previous voyage, The Noordam arriving at Ellis Island April 5, 1910. They returned to Indianapolis, Indiana and rented a house in the country and raised their own fruits and vegetables. Roel (Ralph) VanderMeulen died June 15, 1915 and is buried in New Crown Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana.
