She immigrated to the United States in 1850 and has been living in the United States for 50 years. Both of her parents were born in Ireland. She can read, write and speak English. She owns her own farm free and clear. She is enumerated wtih 2 sons and 1 daughter.
She was born December 8, 1833 in western County Mayo, Ireland. Jane immirated with her brother Martin Hynes (who married Bridget Dolan) in 1847. They landed at St. John's Newfoundland and proceeded to New Brunswick, Canada with $50 in their pockets and then went directly down to Boston, Massachusetts. Next they went to Vermont where Martin worked on the railroad for six weeks. Finally they located for fourteen months in New York State where her brother worked on the New York & erie Railroad, worked in public works, and the navy yard. In New York State Jane met Patrick Dolan, who married in 1851. (Anita Dolan speculated they married in Livingston County, New York, and in the town of Nunda, which is about 60 south of Rochester.) Patrick and Jane's first child was born in Poughkeepsie, Duchess County, New York in January 1852. Their second daughter was born in Illinois in 1853. They had eleven children in all.
Patrick and Jane arried in easter Iowa in 1853. The 1854 Iowa Census showed: "Patrick, Jane and two daughters had lived in Iowa for less than one year." It seems their first stop in Iowa was in Jackson County, directly north of Clinton County. Jackson County land records stated: "Patrick Dolan purchased on May 15, 1854 from James Cain of 40 acres in SW1/4 of SW1/4 of Sec2 (legal description 'South West Quarter of the South West Quarter of Section Number Two (2) in Township Number Eighty-Four (84) North Range Number Six (6) East') in Jackson County for the sum of $90; and his sale of this land on May 16, 1855 to John McCanna for $140." The sale in 1855 showed Patrick's wife as "Julie" and she signed by "her mark". Both land deals occured in Dubuque, Iowa. From 1856 to 1860 they were living in Lyons, Township. However, they eventually settled in Lincoln Township and farmed west of Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa for the rest of their lives. Clinton County land records stated: "Patrick purchased 40 acres of land (ND1/4 of SE1/4 Sec 30) in Lincoln Townshp (Twp.82) from the State". (The 1838-1845 Homestead Book on May 2, 1854 shows an original entry on page 184 for 40 acres in Section 30 to Patrick Dolan, and it was recorded on February 1, 1855 in Vol. O, page 261.) In the 1870 U.S. Census Patrick was: "Farming 180 acres of land in Lincoln Township; all was improved with a cash value of $9,000 and farm implements and machinery valued at $110; he had paid wages including room and board of $300; his livestock included 4 horses, 3 milk cows and 12 swine; total value of livestock was $410; he had slaughtered or sold for slaughter livestock valued at $120; the harvest was 400 bushels of Spring wheat, 400 bushels of Indian corn, 60 bushels of oats, 200 bushels of Irish potatoes, and 6 tons of hay; in addition 200 pounds of butter had been processed." In 1870 Patrick applied for U.S. citizenship, and in 1871 he received his naturalization.
After Patrick's death in 1895, Jane lived with her sons Martin and Charles and daughter Margaret on a farm in Liberty Township, far western Clinton County, Iowa. Jane died on December 10, 1908 at Walnut, Iowa; she is buried in Saint Irenaeus Calvary Cemetary, Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa.
