Geert Paap his mother died shortly after his birth and he grew up with his grandmother Berentje Venekant en his step-grandfather Jan Zweep, in the house on the First Lane at the Kromme Elleboog in Ekamp (Finsterwolde). He lived in that house all his life and died there. It was an old, small, farmhouse, with in the back a pigsty and a stable for a cow. Outside he had a nice long vegetable garden and a pasture for a few sheep. He also rented land from the farmer Lauwert Muntinga.
The main part of the house was the "keuken" (kitchen) that was at once living room, kitchen and bedroom, with two double "bedsteden" (built-in beds behind doors). There was also a storage area next to the front door. A small part of the barn at the back of the house was sort of separate because of strategically placed cupboards. In that there was a "regenbak" (reservoir for rain that was collected from the roof). Outside there was another reservoir ("t putte"), lined with peat, for groundwater, to be used for cleaning and such.
Completely separate was the "Kamer", a livingroom/bedroom where ootje (Gepke Smit) used to live.
In Ekamp, at the "Kertjeloane" was a small building for sundayschool and for catechism. Geert Paap was one of the teachers (BWO p.308).
