MilesDeath Claims One of Carroll County's Pioneers, Civil War Veteranand Respected CitizenShortly after noon Thursday, one of Carroll County's pioneers,and respected citizens, John William Miles, passed away at thehome of his daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Smith of Hale, MO.Mr. Miles was born at Memphis, TN, on Feb 22, 1842. At the ageof 3 years he moved with his parents to a farm near Coloma, MO.,at which place he spent the most of his life with the exceptionof a few years near DeWitt, MO.He was a Christian man and in his youth he united with the RushChapel Methodist Church, South. When the Civil War broke out hejoined the army and served under Captain William Henderson andCaptain William Beatty, receiving his honorable discharge at theclose of the war.In 1861 he was united in marriage with Mrs. James Caskey andtothis union nine children were born. Charles F. Miles died Jan7, 1901. The surviving children are Mrs. Hence Wooden of Hale;J. D. Miles of Bogard; T. A. Miles of Denver, CO; Mrs. Chas. H.Smith of Hale; Mrs. W. L. Linville of Chillicothe; J. L. Milesof Lawrence, KS; Mrs. Otis Robertson of Tina; F. D. Miles ofHall, MT, and Mrs, Mollie Carl of CA, besides 34 grandchildrenand 62 great-grandchildren.His first wife died May 23, 1906, and two years later he wasmarried to Lydia E. Boggs, she departing this life March 2,1920, after which Mr. Miles made his home with his daughter,Mrs. Otis Robertson until about four months ago when he came tolive with Mrs. Smith, due to ill health of Mrs. Robertson.Mr. Miles' health had been poor for sometime past but his deathcame as a shock to hismany relatives and friends. He departedthis life on Thursday, December 27, 1928 at the age of 85 years,10 months, and 5 days.Funeral services were held fromRush Chapel Dec., 29, 1928 at 11O'clock conducted by Rev. James L. Bate, chaplain of AmericanLegion. Burial in the family lot at Braden Cemetery."
