Mrs. Ada Sophia Briggs, who died
at her home, Longford, on Saturday,
was a daughter of the late William
and Liza Pitt, and was born at "Long
ford House" in January, I866. She
was one of the last surviving early
pupils of "Broadland House" School,
Launceston. She married the late Louis
Clarence Mason, of Longford. Of this
marriage there aro three children: Mrs.
F. M. Witt (Launceston), Mr. W. J.
Mason (Ulverstone), and Mrs. A. Har
ris (Launceston). She later married
Alfred Henry Briggs, late 1st Remount
Unit, 1st, A.I.F., of Longford. Of this
marriage there were 12 children: Mrs.
K. Carswell (Longford), Mrs. L. Bes
wick (Devonport), Miss Ida Briggs
(Longford), Cpl. Guy Briggs (12th Bn,
A.I.F., who was killed on Gallipoli),
Sgt. Leonard Briggs. M.M. (26th Bn.,
A.I.F., who died of war disabilities in
Hobart in 1932L Mrs. Boland Winter
(Nietta), Major Edgar Briggs (Hobart,
12th bn. A.I.F.. now with (6th Aust
Grn. Bn.), Mr. Ivan Briggs (postmaster
at Rose), Mr. Lionel Briggs (headmas
ter Devonport High School), Mrs. John
Hingham (Goulburn, NT.S.W.), Mrs.
Medwin Collins (Burnie), Mr. Garth
Briggs (Cuprona). There are 26 grand
children and five great-grandchildren.
During a very active life, Mrs. Briggs
found time for many and varied acti
vities. In her youth she was a spirited
horsewoman. She was gifted with a
soprano voice of rare quality, and was
for many years a member and soloist
of the Longford Methodist Church.
She was a also a teacher in the old Long
ford Methodist Sunday school. With
tho coming of maturity she devoted her
life to the interests of her home and
family. She had a passion for ani
mals, birds and flowers, and tho blooms
and shrubs in her old-world garden at
Longford have been greatly admired
by both local residents and visitors
from all parts of the State. A noted
philanthropic worker, she was an ac
tive member of the Methodlst Church
and Methodist Ladies' Aid. and was a
zealous patriotic worker in both the
present and the last wars. She re
tained complete possession of her facul
ties until just before her death.
