From Marguerite Byard He was a rat of Tobruk. During the war, he went to England on the troop ship, Queen Mary but spent the blitz on London in the South Hampton Lockup for sight seeing (AWOL). After the war he was relieving postmaster along the North West Coast of Tasmania. He was one of the leaders of the "pro dam lobby" for the Gordon below Franklin. Because he was leader of this lobby, it ousted the sitting local government in Strahan and voted him in as Warden. Although he accompanied Prime Minister Bob Hawke during his visit to Strahan and was identified as one of his body guards, he was vehemently opposed to the labour movement. He was also a member of the world Heritage Committee.
