Thomas and Lucy decided to migrate from Oundle to the new colony of South Australia. Their application for free passage was accepted and Thomas and his pregnant wife, and three daughters Mary Ann, Lucy, and Frances left London as steerage passengers on 10 June 1838 in the wooden three masted ship, the Winchester. Conditions for passengers were abysmal. Measles, smallpox and typhus took their toll and fifteen people died, many of them children. The ship arrived at Port Adelaide on 23 September 1838. Op de boot baarde Lucy een doodgeboren kind.
