Lady Aernt van Rosendael, spouse of Johan Wolfertsz van Culemborg, brought that name into the family. What do we know of her? Her existence is derived from an act from the register of the Holland feodal chamber, dated on 18 April 1433, in which she gets as feodal property five morgen land in Zwijndrecht (see Fig. 6), and also in which she stands as the wife of Jan van Culemborg and by him had a daughter Jutte (this Jutte is the grandmother of above named Jutta van Heuckelum). Fig. 1: Act of the Hollandse feodal chamber from 1433, where in Lady Aernt van Rosendael gets feodal possessions inZwijndrecht She was a descendant from the family Van Rosendael. The progenitor was Jan, Lord Gillisz. He was page (in 1325), knight (in 1341), burgher, merchant and alderman in Dordrecht. He is mentioned as estate-steward of South Holland from 24 April 1320 until 4 April 1333 and as bailiff of South Holland in 1321. He buys, under approval of Earl Willem III, on 6 August 1311, the manor of East Barendrecht from Gerard, Lord of Voorne. He owed the House Rosendael in Dordrecht that he dedicates to Lord Nicolaes van Putten and Strijen, which he had received on 3 February 1311 from these in hereditary feodal possession. He gives Rosendael as usufruct to his second spouse, Lizebette, which on 6 February 1311, was ratified by Lord Nicolaes in a charter. Between 28 October 1338 and 24 September 1341 he died. His wife Lizebette was supposedly a granddaughter of Willem III van Strijen. Her children and their descendants called themselves Van Rosendael, for the house which she had received from her spouse. In 1677 this was still called a "distinguished House" in Dordrecht as "Kleyn and Groot Rosendael"[57]. Lady Aernt was a daughter of the knight Jan, Lord Jansz van Rosendael. This nobleman belonged to those who on 3 May 1398 obeyed Duke Aelbrecht to fight against the Friezen. He was also under the nobles who were present on 13 February 1419 in Woudrichem when the agreement was made between Jan van Brabant and Jan van Beieren. He held important administrative positions. Among other things he was alderman and schout of Dordrecht and dike earl of Zwijndrecht. His father, grandfather of Lady Aernt, was also a knight. He called himself Jan van Rosendael, but this name is taken from his wife, who is a daughter of Jan, Lord Gillisz. His father was Aernd van Krayesteyn, so thisknight Jan van Rosendael was also called Jan Aerndsz van Krayesteyn. Because he was not his father's heir, the castle Crayesteyn, which stood in Sliedrecht, initially became inherited by his half-brother Herbaren and after his childless death by his half-sister Sophia. Lady Aernt, before she married Jan van Culemborg, was married with Philips van der Does, with whom she had a closed marriage contract on 7 October 1413. The most of her property became inherited by her son the Bartholomeus van der Does and only a small part came to her daughter Jutte.
