"In Commemoration of Jan Mast and Jantje Mast Nee Smit", a family history found at Herrick Library, Holland: "Then they went by ox-carts

to the home of Hilbert Mast who had arrived in Drenthe, Michigan in the year of 1847. Hilbert Mast lived 1 1/4 mile west of Drenthe. He had 160 acres of land. They bought 90 acres of land of Hilber

t Mast.... (The relationship of Jan to Hilbert was not documented, but they were probably brothers or cousins. My ancestor, Roelof Mast, is also assumed to have been either a brother or cousin. Hil

bert and Roelof are buried in the same cemetery. I also assume that Hilbert and Roelof were from Staphorst.)
