3. Isabella Beveridge, 1871 census, Ancestry.com, born in Dengerwtown, Fife, examination of same census on Scotlands people find it is in fact Dunfermline, Fife, and is a very bad transcription error.
4. Peter Harrower, sons marriage to Agnes Cowan, states mothers name as, "Isabella Harrower, previously Cant, MS Beveridge.
5. Isabella Beveridge Compiled 17 June 2011 by Colin Harrower
Isabella Beveridge was born in Dunfermline, Fife, around 1846, to Robert Beveridge, Collier, b 1805 and Helen Watters b 1806. (Still to prove birth date)
She appeared in the 1851 Scottish Census, living in Glenmavis, Lanarkshire, a small mining town of the day, situated just North of Airdrie, in a house with 3 brothers, William, 21, Coal Miner, b. Dunfermline, Robert, 16, b. Prestonpans, Thomas, 8, b. Halbeath, and one sister, Marion,14, b Capeldrae, Fife. Capaldrae is where the now Westfield plant is near Ballingry, Fife.
As the family have no parents, it is assumed that they are both deceased. (Check)
A search in the 1861 census (on Ancestry) can find no trace of Isabella.
The next time we find Isabella, living in Bellsdyke, Bothkenner, and working as a domestic servant, is on her marriage register in 1863, where she marries John Caint, born around 1845, farm servant, of Loanside, Clackmannan. John's parents are John Caint, soldier (deceased) and Elizabeth Murray.
John and Isabella are married at Clackmannan Manse, 4th of April, 1863.
Isabella initials her name as I.B.
Her parents are stated as being Robert Beveridge, collier, (deceased) and Helen Watters.
Witnesses at marriage are John Ferguson and Elizabeth Meiklejohn.
In the 1871 census, both John Cant, age 26, and Isabella Cant, age 26, appear, living in South side, Clackmannan, with their family, of 2 sons, Edward, 5, b. Airth, Stirlingshire, John, 1, b. Clackmannan, and 1 daughter, Elizabeth, 3, b. Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
It is stated that John, now working as an Agricultural Labourer, was born in Fossoway, Perthshire, around 1845.
It is also stated (on Ancestry) that Isabella was born in Dengerwtown, Fife.
Examination of same census on Scotland's people find it is in fact Dunfermline, Fife, and is a very bad transcription error.
The next time Isabella appears, age 35, is in the 1881 Scottish census, but surprisingly, she is now living with Colin Harrower, Coal Miner, age 29, born in Clackmannan around 1852.
They are living in Roughrigg Row, No 91, New Monkland Landward, Lanarkshire, with family of 1 son, John, 11, b. Clackmannan, and 4 daughters, Elizabeth, 13, b. Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Helen, 7, b. Dalry, Ayrshire, Isabella, 5, b. Falkirk, Stirlingshire, and Janet, 1, b. Muiravonside, Stirlingshire.
(Colin's parents were Peter Harrower, b 1828, son of George Harrower, and Isobel McArthur, and Helen Snaddon b around 1823, Still to trace Helen's parents)
At this time it was suggested, that as John Cant had disappeared, and Colin Harrower had appeared, that John had died, and Isabella had re married as a widow, to Colin Harrower.
No record of marriage between Isabella and Colin can be found.
Another search in the 1881 census comes up with an unexpected result. John Cant had not died; he had left Isabella for some reason and was now living with Janet Dick, their children, and with Janet's children from a previous marriage.
John Cant, 36, b. Fossoway, Perthshire, Janet Dick, 39, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, Janet Cant, 3, b. Clackmannan, Ann Cant, 1, b. Clackmannan, Elizabeth Cant, 1, b. Clackmannan, and also Elizabeth Kinsella, 19 stepdaughter, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, Jane Kinsella, 17, stepdaughter, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, John Kinsella, 14, stepson, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, William Kinsella, 11, stepson, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, and Richard Kinsella, 9, stepson, b.. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire.
The 1891 Scottish census, uncovers the fact that Isabella, age 45, and Colin, age 39, are living as husband and wife, in Square, Clackmannan, with family of 2 sons, John 21, b Clackmannan, Peter, 4, b. Comrie, Perthshire, and 4 daughters, Helen, 17, b. Dalry, Ayrshire, Janet, 11, b. Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Catherine, 8, b. Bo'ness, Linlithgowshire, and Marion, 1, b. Comrie, Perthshire.
The 1891 census for Isabella can only be found on Scotland's people. The same census cannot be found on Ancestry.
A search of the same 1891 census on Ancestry, was as follows -
John Cant, age 46, b. Fossoway, Perthshire, living with Janet Cant, age 49, b. Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, residing at North side of road, Clackmannan.
John is working as a Stone Quarryman. Living in the same house are 2 daughters, Janet age 13, and Annie, 11, both b. Sauchie, Clackmannanshire.
The Kinsella step family had vanished?
John and Janet, appear to be living as husband and wife, which would give a marriage date of around about 1877 - 1878, before the birth of their first child, Janet.
The next surprise came when the actual marriage date was found on Scotland's people.
John Cant, aged 56, Quarryman, Widower, son of John Cant, labourer, (deceased) and Elizabeth Murray, residing Main Street, Sauchie, Alloa, marriage to Janet Dick or Kinsella, aged 59, Widow, also of Main Street, Sauchie, Alloa, daughter of James Dick, Nailer (deceased) and Jane Stewart. The couple were married 6 September, 1900 at new Sauchie. Witnesses were ?M A Rattray?, John Stewart, George Philp, and Kate McLeod.
There was the name "Kinsella" again?
So John had married again, as a widower. Who was he a widower to?
A search on Scotland's people found that out:
Isabella Beveridge, married to Colin Harrower, death, 5th August, 1900, Store Row, Oakley, Carnock (Forth Iron Works), age 54, parents names not recorded, died from Chronic Myelitis, Exhaustion. Informant of death was John McLauchlan, Son-in-Law.
Isabella had died exactly 1 month, prior to John Cant's marriage to Janet Dick, yet he had lived with Janet when the 1881 census was taken, and possibly earlier, they had obviously had family together, Janet and Annie, starting that family in around 1877.
The 1901 census, found firstly, Colin Harrower, age 48, b. Clackmannan, formerly Coal Miner, living in 72 Store Row, Oakley, Carnock (Forth Iron Works), with son Peter, 14, and daughter Marion, 11, both b. Comrie Village, Perthshire.
The same 1901 census also finds John Cant, Freestone Quarryman, 57, b. Whistlemunt, Perthshire, and Janet Dick, 60, b. Bannockburn, living in Sauchie, Alloa, with Janet 23, and Annie 21, both b. Sauchie, Clackmannanshire.
Whistlemount is 2-3 miles from Fossoway, in Perthshire.

Help required to trace John Harrower's b1870 mothers information
WendyCunningham69
Posted: 20 Feb 2008 11:55AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: HARROWER, BEVERIDGE, CANT AND SHIELDS
Could anyone please help me trace information on John Harrower b 1870 Clackmannan. He does not appear on the 1871 census. On his marriage certificate to Marion Shields it details his father as Colin Harrower b1852 and mother as Isabella Beveridge b 1846.
However, I can find no details on Isabella Beveridge or marriage certificate for Colin and Isabella.
John has siblings Elizabeth b 1868, Helen b1874, Janet b 1880 and Isabella 1876. Elizabeth is not on the 1871 census either and this would mean that Colin was only 16 when she was born.
The plot thickens in that there is a family called Cant on the 1871 census who has listed Isabella Cant, John Cant and Elizabeth Cant all with the same dates of birth. Can anyone find out if John Harrower was originally a CANT and also Whether Isabella Beveridge married John Cant first and then Colin Harrower.?
Thank you in advance for anyone who reads and replies to this message.
Wendy.
Reference the above post, another search in the 1901 census, discovered John Harrower, 31, Coal Miner , b Clackmannan, Marion Harrower, 26, b Bathgate, Linlithgow, Calvin (Colin) Harrower, 6, b Oakley, Carnock, William, 4 b Oakley, Carnock, and Isabella Harrower, 11 months, b Oakley, Carnock, all living at 33 Store Row, Oakley, Carnock (Forth Iron Works).
Was this John, Harrower, found in the 1881, and 1891 census, and John, Cant in the 1871 census?
The ages and place of birth matched in all 3 cases.
This encouraged another Scotland's people search for the marriage of John Harrower, and Marion Shields.
John Harrower, age 23, Coal Miner, residing in Oakley, Carnock, son of Colin Harrower, Coal Miner, and Isabella Beveridge : and Marion Shields, age 19, weaver, damask factory, residing in 2 Baldridgeburn, Dunfermline, daughter of William Shields, shoemaker, and Helen Watson. The marriage took place on 29th September 1893 at 2 Baldridgeburn, Dunfermline. Witnesses to marriage were Nelley? (Helen?) Harrower and John McLauchlan
John McLauchlan had appeared earlier ; he was the informant of death to his Mother in law, Isabella Beveridge Harrower, in 1900.

After reading this again, and another Google search, I came across the next saga, I discovered the name Kinsella again at; (which tied up with what I'd already found)

Genealogy Chat: MARRIAGE DOES NOT EXIST !!!
Anyone like a puzzle?
My gg was John Harrower b 1870. His father was Colin Harrower b1852 and his mother Isabella Beveridge b1846.
1881 census john is 11. 1871 census john does not exist.
On Scotland's people there is no register of a marriage between Colin and Isabella. John's oldest sibling was Elizabeth b.1868. Which would have made Colin 16 at the time of her birth!!???
On 1871 census there is a John Cant 1868, Isabella Cant 1846 and john Cant 1868 and Elizabeth Cant born 1868 plus an Edward Cant born 1866.
Can anyone find out if these are the same people and whether Isabella married twice, meaning that John Harrower was really a Cant.
Thanks to anyone who can solve this puzzle as I am completely stumped and its driving me nuts.
Wendy
So there is no marriage between a Colin Harrower and Isabella Cant?
Gail.
Did they get divorced or just go there separate ways?
Is this John Cant husband of Isabella in 1881 - Kinsella's are step children?

Hi Gail
John Harrower's marriage cert states his mum and dad as Colin harrower and Isabella nee Beveridge.
I have tried marriage records online of Colin Harrower with Isabella Beveridge, Cant and just Isabella and there are no records.
The John Cant that I found was born 1846 and had only Edward, Elizabeth and John.
Don't think there is a relationship with the Kinsella's
I wonder if after 1871 John Cant died?? On 1881 census there is no mention of Edward but there is a Helen b. 1874, Isabella b 1876 and a Janet 1880 all called Harrower.
Its confusing stuff!!
Wendy
Can anyone help or give tips as to where I go now?
Thanks
Wendy
-------------------------------------------------
Let's sum that up ---
Isabella Beveridge was married to John Cant, in 1863, and sometime between the 1871 census, and the 1881 census, she left him to live with Colin Harrower and started her second family.
John Cant, is living with (not married to) Janet Dick or Kinsella, in the 1881 census, with 2 families, part his own, part step family, whose surname is Kinsella.
John and Janet do not marry till September 1900, 1 month after Isabella dies.
Janet Dick is previously married to a Kinsella male. In the 1891 census the Kinsella family disappear?
It also appeared that John, born 1870 in Clackmannan, was son to John Cant, and Isabella Beveridge, but went with his mother between 1871 and 1881, and called himself Harrower.
------------------------------------------------
The name John McLauchlan, has cropped up a couple of times, he was the informant of death to his Mother in law, Isabella Beveridge Harrower, in 1900, and also witness at John Harrower and Marion Shields marriage in September 1893.
Who was he?
Another search in Scotland's people again found Colin Harrower, in the new 1911 census.
Colin was living with the McLauchlan family, in Ross Lane in North Parish, Dunfermline, and John, 40, miner coal hewer, b. Lanark, was the head of that family.
John's wife was Helen, 36, b. Ayr.
Colin Harrower 58, retired Coal Miner, b. Clackmannan, was stated as being Father in Law to head.
We had now found Helen, daughter to Colin Harrower and Elizabeth Beveridge, born in Dalry, Ayrshire, around 1875, first found in the 1881 census.
John and Helen, had a family of 2 sons, Peter, 14, b. Carnock, Fife, and Colin, 10, b. Kinross, and 5 daughters, Isabella, 13, b. Carnock, Fife, Agnes, also 13, b. Carnock, Fife, (possible twins), Helen, 8, b. Kinross, Marion, 5, b. Carnock, Fife, and Elizabeth, 1, b. Dunfermline, Fife.
John and Helen's marriage on 29th December 1893, at Old Rows, Lassodie, Beath, was easy to find, on Scotland's people.
John was a Coal Miner, 23 years of age residing at Oakley, Carnock, parents were Peter McLauchlan, Coal Miner, and Ann Fyfe.
Helen, 20, a factory weaver, residing in Old Rows, Lassodie, Beath, parents recorded as Colin Harrower, Coal Miner, and Isabella Harrower, MS Cook.
Thomas Blackwood, and Bella Harrower are witnesses.
Where has the MS name of Cook come from, surely Beveridge, and a simple mistake by either person declaring, or perhaps the Registrar?
------------------------------------------------------------
Colin and Isabella's Son, Peter, born around 1887 was the next one to find. He was mentioned in the 1891 census when he was 4, and also in the 1901 census, when he was 14.
On 1st April 1907, at 67 Oswald Street, Glasgow, he married Agnes Cowan 21, both parties residing at Elliot Hill, Dunfermline. Peters parents recorded as Colin Harrower, Coal Miner, and Isabella Harrower, previously Cant, MS Beveridge (deceased). Agnes's parents recorded as Peter Cowan, Coal Miner, and Jane Robertson. Witnesses were Alexander Cowan, miner, and Jeannie Hogg or Cowan.
To complete this mystery, the death of John Cant is found in Scotland's people. He lived until 13th February 1923, when he was 78 years of age, he died at 5 Grandra Row, Sauchie, Alloa, from a cerebral haemorrhage, and paraplegia.
Parents recorded as John Cant, Labourer, (deceased) and Elizabeth Murray (deceased)
John Cant's death records him as Widower of, 1st, Elizabeth Harrower, 2nd, Janet Dick;
Now there's another Mystery?
6. Glenmavis
Glenmavis - The valley of the Plain?
Glenmavis is situated to the north of Airdrie and northwest of Coatbridge. Almost all of the traffic from the north to Coatbridge goes through Glenmavis. (therby hangs another tale!!) In 1830 the population was a mere 30 - in the the 1870s it had increased to 339 - In recent years it has developed into a "dormitory town" where most people live a reasonably quiet life but travel outside it for work. In 1980 the population was 2215 - since then the housing developers have helped to increase the population to well over 3000 and growing!.
There two schools of thought on how the village was named. One suggests that it was named because of the prevalence of the Mavis or thrush (remember the old song "I have heard the Mavis singing"....?). The other suggestion is that it comes from the Gaelic - magh (pronounced may) meaning a plain - Glenmavis - The valley of the Plain?
If you know another or more definitive origin of the name - write to us!!)
Glenmavis is famous for its church, referred to locally as "The Auld Grey Kirk on the Hill". It is the original New Monkland parish church. It was originally built in 1640, and stands on a hill overlooking the village - some 600 feet above sea level. From this hill on a clear day, it is possible to see the Isle of Arran, which lies some 60 miles to the west.
In 1777 the church was rebuilt from it's single storey form into the building that stands to this day. (This is why the steeple of the church looks out of proportion to the present building). The "Auld Grey Kirk on the Hill" name comes from the discolouration of the stones of the building owing to smoke and fumes from nearby heavy industry. - Since this industry is now a thing of the past, the building has reverted to it's original stone colour.
