John Harrower & Isabella Wilson Golden Wedding
St Johns Church Hall, Camelon
Reported in Falkirk Herald - Saturday 04 January 1930
The hall of St John's Church, Camelon, was the scene of an extremely happy event on Tuesday evening, when Mr and Mrs John Harrower, who reside at 33 Mansion House Road, celebrated their golden wedding. The jubilarians, who are aged 70 and 66 years respectfully, were married on 31st December, 1879, at Tillicoultry, by the Rev. James Brown. Mr Harrower is a native of Alloa and his good lady was born in Tillicoultry. Twenty-nine years ago they came to Falkirk and later took up residence in Camelon. Mr Harrower, who started work at the early age of seven, has been for these last 28 years employed in the baking department of the old Camelon Cooperative Society, now incorporated with the Falkirk and District United Co-operative Society. He and Mrs Harrower are still hale and hearty and in the enjoyment of excellent health. They are known to and respected by a wide circle of friends in the Camelon district, and they have been the recipients of a host of congratulatory messages on the attainment of their jubilee. At the celebrations in the St. John's Church Hall on Tuesday evening there was a company of approximately 100, comprising members of the family, relatives and friends, and there was also present from Alloa, Mrs Wardlaw, who was bridesmaid at the wedding 50 years ago. The interesting proceedings were presided over by the Rev. Robert Headrick, B.D. and after supper had been partaken of, the chairman extended his own and the company's congratulations to the venerable couple. The health of "The Jubilarians" was enthusiastically pledged on the toast being submitted by Mr Colin Harrower, the eldest son, and Mr John Harrower appropriately replied and afterwards gave the toast, "The Bridesmaid," which was replied to on behalf of Mrs Wardlaw by Mr James Rennie, Tillicoultry. "The Family " was proposed by Mr James Wilson and replied to by Mr John Harrower jun. The occasion. was marked by a series of interesting presentations. On behalf of the members of the family, Mr Colin Harrower presented his parents with a purse of sovereigns, while a gift of a like nature was handed over on behalf of friends by Mr James Rennie, Tillicoultry. From the grandchildren Mr Harrower received a walking stick and Mrs Harrower received an umbrella, these gifts being handed over jointly by Master Hendry, Miss Isabel and Miss Bunty Harrower. Of a family of eight there are surviving five sons and a daughter, two having made the supreme sacrifice in the war. All the members of the family, as well as fourteen grandchildren, were present at the function, which concluded with an enjoyable programme of music and dancing. Forrester's "Broadway" Orchestra providing popular and appropriate accompaniment.
