Person note: I have just finished the book "It Happened In Italy", and it was all new to me. I have been to Campagna four times, over the years. On one of those visits, I took Mother back to see the town she had been born in. On a previoustrip, I had found her home from the direction s she had given me, This time, with mother, I drove her up to Campagnia and then up her street beside the mountain, stopped the car, and we got out. Nanny walked over and stood in the driveway, lookedand looked. It was raining lightly, but I could easily see the tears coming down her face. We went also to Eboli, which is down the mountain, the closest town, and visited cousins - the Masiello's. They knew we were coming, and a distant niece whohad just graduated from the university in Rome, in Music, joined us, and there were many conversations in Italian. There was no mention by anyone about what had taken place therein Eboli or in Campagna [less than ten miles away up the mountain, about Jewish internments. My grandfather Pillone married Carmela Masiello from Eboli, and these people were from her side of the family. It is interesting that on Saturdays the boys from Campagna would go down to Eboli for the passagietta aroundthe plaza where the boys walked around the plaza in one direction and the girls walked around the plaza in the opposite direction. No chaperones were needed for this event and they all had a very sopcial evening. This is where Filandro met Carmela.
On my last trip, Betty Lee went with me, and she drove the rented car. When we started up the roadf rom Eboli I told her she was on the wrong road because everything looked different. But up the mountain road we went and when we got to the town, buildings were down and there was still debris about - from a major earthquake. When we drove up to look at Nanny's home, the house was gone! All that remained was the large gate and driveway. No house. This was about 30 years ago.
It appears that when Bettina went to Campagna, years later, the town, church, and other buildings had been restored and no sign of the earthquake remained. Apparently, it had been a little prosperous because of the military base there. I don'tknow if it is still there. But I was told that Nanny's grandfather, Carlos Pillone had been the chief at the base. Nanny also told me that before they left Campagnia for the US when she was about seven, they had electric lights in their home andshe would get in trouble for repeatedly turning them on and off.
Again, thank you for sending all the pictures and information. Your uncle Jay.
