BERTHOLD [I] (-before [1108]). [1080]/[1100/04]. m firstly --- von Schwarzenberg, daughter of HEINRICH von Schwarzenberg [in Bavaria, near Bohemian frontier] Vogt von Regensburg & his wife ---. Wegener cites a source according to which Babo Abbot of Deutz was named avunculus of Berthold's son Friedrich[1506]. m secondly [as her first husband,] RICHGARD, daughter of ---. A charter dated to [1100/05] records donations to Oberaltaich by "Domna Richgard uxor Pertholdi" for the soul of her husband, witnessed by "Adalpreht Comes, Engelpreht filius eius…"[1507]. Wegener speculates that she was Richgard von Sponheim, daughter of Engelbert [I] Graf von Sponheim[1508]. However, if this is correct, Berthold must have died in [1090], estimated as the date of Richgard's second marriage to Poppo II Marchese di Carniola e Istria. Wegener suggests that it is correct because Berthold [I] von Regensburg named his son Engelbert[1509]. However, he also cites a donation by Richgard dated [1108] for the soul of her husband Berthold[1510], which suggests that Berthold's death may have been closer to that date, which would exclude his wife being Richgard, daughter of Graf Engelbert [I], in view of her other two marriages. A further difficulty is that Richgard von Sponheim is recorded as having a son named Engelbert by her marriage with Gebhard von Wasserburg. Although cases are found of children bearing the same name, the practice remains the exception. Berthold [I] & his first wife had four children:

b) HEINRICH . Wegener cites a source dated [1140] which names Heinrich as avunculus of Hohold [II] von Wohnzach[1511]. [1100]/[1140]. m ADELHEID, daughter of ---. [1130].

c) LIUTGARD . m HOHOLD [I] von Wolnzach (-[1125]).

d) FRIEDRICH (-Burg Wolkenburg 25 Oct 1131, bur Abtei Siegburg). Archbishop of Köln 1100.

Berthold [I] & his second wife had one child:

e) ENGELBERT . A charter dated to [1100/05] records donations to Oberaltaich by "Domna Richgard uxor Pertholdi" for the soul of her husband, witnessed by "Adalpreht Comes, Engelpreht filius eius…"[1512]. [1108]/1125. m --- von Müllenark, daughter of ---.
