"Ethelhelm comes Wiltunensium" carried the alms of Alfred King of Wessex to Rome in 887[592]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in [886/87] "ealdorman Æthelhelm took the alms of the West Saxons and of king Alfred to Rome"[593]. King Alfred granted "Æthelhelm comes" land at North Newnton, Wiltshire by charter dated 892[594]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 893 "ealdorman Æthelred and ealdorman Æthelhelm and ealdorman Æthelnoth" besieged and later defeated the Danes "at Buttington on Severn shore"[595]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the death in 897 "nine nights before midsummer" of "Æthelhelm ealdorman of Wiltshire"[596]. m ÆLSWITHA, daughter of ---.
