Gerbrand Vissering, born 2 June 1813, at Groningen, died 27 June 1869, at Jisp, unmarried, was a son of Jacobus David Vissering and his second wife Baudina Cnoop. He studied theology at the University of Groningen and the Mennonite Seminary at Amsterdam, thereupon serving as pastor at Zuid-Zijpe 1837-1842 and Wormer-Jisp 1842-died 1869. Vissering was a somewhat solitary man and a Greek scholar; his sermons were not very popular. In 1854 he published a new translation of the New Testament from the original Greek (Amsterdam, 1854, repr. 1859). For this scholarly work he received in 1860 an honorary Th.D. degree from the Groningen University. His New Testament translation was also much appreciated by the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church, who recommended his version and appointed him on a committee to prepare a new Dutch Bible to replace the antiquated Statenvertaling.
This family furnished two Mennonite preachers, i.e., Jacobus David Vissering and his son Gerbrand Vissering.
