Spellingvariant: Gerhard Karsdorp.
Unlike Weber, Karsdorp had lived in an urban setting. He was born on 23 May 1729 in Altona and was the eldest son in a prominent Mennonite family. His father, Gerrit Sr. (†1750), was an Ältester in the Hamburg-Altona Mennonite congregation. In contrast to some of his contemporaries like Reinhard Rahusen, Gerrit Karsdorp Jr. does not seem to have received a university education, although he was highly educated. In addition to lessons from his father, he also received private tutoring in modern languages and scholarship from the Lutheran school teacher Nicolaus Caspar de Roy. Karsdorp was called to be a preaching candidate (Proponent) at a young age in 1749, two years after his baptism. After this initial appointment he was promoted to preacher (Lehrer) in 1752 and finally to elder (Lehrer im vollen Dienst) in 1764. Although some of his colleagues in the Mennonite church did receive a salary for their preaching, Karsdorp remained a lay preacher (Liebesprediger) in the old tradition. He earned his living as a businessman who owned a velvet factory in Hamburg, which he had purchased from Isaak Stockman. Stockman had accepted Karsdorp as a young apprentice and eventually became his father-in-law in 1758, when Karsdorp married Sara Stockman. Later in his life Karsdorp did retire from his business activities, but he remained a preacher and avid book collector until his death on 11 October 1811.
Karsdorp, Gerrit, Jr. (1729-1811). Gerrit Karsdorp Jr., son of Gerrit Karsdorp (d. 1750), b. 23 May 1729, d. 11 October 1811, was minister of the Hamburg-Altona Mennonite Church. He studied history and church history (Mosheim) independently. To learn merchandising he was apprenticed to Isaac Stokman, a Mennonite, whose daughter Sara he married in 1758. In 1750, at the age of 21 years, he became a ministerial candidate; in 1753 he became a preacher of the congregation, and in 1764 he was ordained to the ministry. He served the church nearly 61 years. He refused a salary because being in business he did not need it. During his long service he ordained many preachers.
A portrait of Karsdorp adapted from an etching by L. Wolf is contained in Gesammelte Dekmäler der Liebe und Achtung Altona, 1812.
