He was doubtless related to the Rowley family. James Barker of Rowley, was admitted a freeman October 7, 1640; died September 1678. Thomas Barker, of Rowley, was a proprietor of Rowley in 1643; died November, 1650. Richard Barker was the first settler in what is now the town of Andover, the only citizen known to have been there as early as 1643. In a deed of land and stock in Ipswich to Richard Barker, August 13, 1643, his residence is given as Cochichawicke (Andover). he was a prominent man in both town and church affairs, and served on many important committees, was often selectman, and administered many estates for his neighbors, performing the duties assumed later by lawyers in the community. His house lot was near that of John Osgood, on the north side of Cochichawickem and his descendants settled in the vicinity until the entire shore of Great Pond on the north, east and south, was taken up by the farms of the family. His will, dated April 7, 1688, proved March 28, 1693, bequeathed to children John, William, '''Ebenezer''', Richard, Stephen, Benjamin, Sarah and Hester, and to granchildren Priscilla, Hester and Sarah, children of the deceased daughter Hannah. By the early part of August, 1692, Abigail's brother-in-law, Daniel Eames, and his mother, Rebecca Blake Eames, both found themselves in prison accused of witchcraft. On August 29, 1692 Ebenezer's brother, William Barker Sr., and his niece, Mary Barker were also imprisoned for witchcraft. Three days later, Ebenezer's nephew, William Barker, Jr, was also arrested on September 1st.ndover Church. In this ludicrous exercise, those who were accused of witchcraft were blindfolded and forced to touch the "afflicted" girls, which could identify them as a witch. With such evidence, Abigail Barker was arrested. Her husband, Ebenezer Barker, quickly joined the newly formed Andover resistance and was a signer of petitions of October 12, October 18, and December 6 sent the governor and the high court. Despite the petition, the grand jury at the Superior Court of Judicature indicted Abigail. However in a trial by jury on January 6, 1693, she was found not guilty. She was released, having been imprisoned for 18 weeks in Salem.
