Notities over Arie Vlooswijk

Born in Overeind. RC baptism witnessed by Lambertie Aries van Vlooswijk (grandmother Lammertje van Oostrum). RC marriage witnessed by Cornelis van Rossum and Hendrijntje Vlooswijk. There is no record of Arie's death. The Jutphaas RC Register of Burials stops in 1779. However, a document from 1789, about appointing a new guardian to his children, reveals that he had died on November 11, 1785.
The records paint Arie as a farmer leasing 36 morgen of land from his mother in law Wijnanda Blom, 24 morgen that Wijnanda had been leasing before, 4 morgen from his own mother (which were sold in 1668), and 4 morgen from one Pieter Kelffkens, brother of one the family’s solicitor Johannes Kelffkens.

When Wijnanda Blom dies in 1777 Arie buys the land he had been leasing from her, which by then consisted of a farmhouse, 3 barns, a coach house, a bakery, a brewery, a pigeon house and a sheep stable, plus 33 morgen of orchard, crop land, meadow and hay land, of which 6 morgen were held in fief from the houses of Vianen and Ameide. It also included 4 morgen of hay land located in Galekop. He finances this purchase from his wife’s share in the estate and a Fl 4,000 loan from professor Burmannus, i.e. Franciscus Burmannus or Burman, professor of theology at the Utrecht Academy and a preacher. Arie’s work as a manager of Poor Relief could have put him in touch with Burmannus.

Arie also buys 8 morgen of land, 4 of which had previously been leased by his brother in law Hendrik Sweserijn. When the estate of Cornelia and Arie is divided between their three heirs in 1791, Engeltje’s husband Cornelis van Bentum takes over the farm, which by then was 62 morgen big. How Arie’s property grew from 45 morgen to 62 is not revealed by the available records. Cornelis also takes over a lease of 24 morgen land, and one of 4 morgen.

Wijnanda Blom trusted her 4 farming sons in law. She leases land to them all, although one lived in Bunnik. She seems to have tolerated that they were not always on time in paying the rent. She underwrites their debts, and they hers. She calls on their help in the sale and purchase of land, and appoints them as executors to her will, which was almost entirely dedicated to cutting out her fifth son in law from control over daughter Maria’s share in the estate. The farmers seem to have acquited themselves well of their task as manager of Maria’s trustfund. Several years after Wijnanda’s death the executors take the opportunity to deprive Theodorus Eijkelenboom from parental control over his daughter with Maria. In other words, they arrange for Maria to divorce Theodorus de facto, because de jure it was not possible (adultery and domestic violence were the only legal grounds of a divorce, and that required a court case). Arie is part of that final act in 1784, although he dies soon afterwards.

They agree to this end to an apparently troubled marriage despite the fact that Goyert van Schaik and Hendrik Swezerijn were wardens
of the Jutphaas Roman Catholic church, and Arie appears to have been one of the managers of its Poor Relief. But in those days survival and continuity ae more of a worry to the Catholic church than doctrinal purity.

Arie dies in 1785 leaves a daughter of 20, a daughter of 18 and a daughter of 8. Goyert van Schaik and Anthonie de Wit (Arie’s brother in law) are appointed as their guardians. In 1789 Anthonie dies and Goyert’s son in law Cornelis van Mastwijk takes over. They become the executors of the Vlooswijk estate when Cornelia dies, probably in 1789. Cornelis van Bentum receives the farm. Wijnanda gets her share in money. She lived in Bunnik by then. And 13 years old Johanna receives her share in money, from which Goyert had borrowed Fl 1,000 only 2 months before! Johanna later marries Cornelis Pauw, Cornelis van Bentum’s nephew by his older half-sister Anthonia. The records seem to indicate that Cornelis and Cornelis were close.

For a long time I suspected that Arie and Hendrina were close but I found no proof of their relationship, until I discovered Hendrina’s prenuptial, proving that Arie and Hendrina are siblings. This means that I descend from their parents, Johannes Vlooswijk and Engeltje Spruijt, via two different routes: a) Arie Vlooswijk to Engeltje Vlooswijk to Arie van Bentum to Engelbert van Bentum married to Engelina Kunneman; and b) Hendrina Vlooswijk to Engeltje van Rossum to Johannes Kunneman to Engelina Kunneman married to Engelbert van Bentum.
People: Arie Vlooswijk, Diederik Johan Heereman. Date: May 3, 1766. Reference: U184a27 act 180. Subject: Lease.

Arie Vlooswijk leases 24 morgen of crop land and meadow from Diederik Johan Heereman,
for 6 years and a rent of Fl 343. The land is located in Nedereind and also includes the so-called Vronestein Tithe. The conditions are simple and not unusual. The land was previously used by Wijnanda Blom, widow of Gerrit Noordeloos; however it did not turn up in the records searching on Noordeloos or Blom, probably because they are mentioned as previous tenants and not as the current ones or the landlord.

People: Arie Vlooswijk, Pieter Kelffkens. Date: May 15, 1773. Reference: U211a3 act 184. Subject: Lease.

Arie rents 4 morgen of land in Jutphaas from Pieter Kelffkens for a period of 6 years and for Fl 60. Unusually, all taxes and levies are the landlord’s, without detailing them, including the XX stuivers a morgen. The land was previously used by Roemert Kraaijkamp, i.e. Arie’s cousin’s husband, and is located next to that of Wijnanda Blom and Baatje de Waaij. The tenant shall cut the grass on one field on 8 days around St John’s, if not the landlord can have it done at his expense. He shall spread cow dung on the same field twice a year, if not the landlord can have it done at his expense. He shall have cows and not cut the grass on another field. And keep everything in good order.

Arie Vlooswijk and Cornelis Mastwijk (the husband of Wijnanda van Schaik, Arie’s niece by Antonia Noordeloos and
Goyert van Schaik) are poor masters of the Jutphaas Roman Catholic Poor Relief, i.e. they decide on poor relief. In this capacity they rent out a house, yard and around 4 morgen of crop land, orchard
and meadow to one Claas van Wichem. The lease is for 12 years; the rent is Fl 100. One condition is that the widow Bouwman can stay in the room she is renting, and that Van Wichem gives her 3 sacks of potatoes a year. Should she die he can take over the rent of Fl 14 a year. Should Van Wichem build a barn on the land, he has to take it down when the lease expires. He shall cut and prune part of the trees on the land; the landlord the rest. He shall sow winter grain on half the crop land when the lease expires.

People: Arie Vlooswijk, heirs of Diederik Johan Heereman, Willem Versteeg. Date: September 6, 1783. Reference: U225a13 act 73. Subject: Lease.

Arie Vlooswijk extends the lease on 24 morgen of crop land and meadow, and the tithe, for another 6 years, and a rent of Fl 400 a year. The last contract was in 1771. The contract from 1777 is missing. The contract is again with Willem Versteeg, acting on behalf of the heirs of Diederik
Johan Heereman. The conditions remain the same, except that the contract states that he is not to allow sheep to graze on the land.

People: Arie Vlooswijk, Anthonia Adriana van Rijnberck widow of Pieter Kelffkens. Date: April 2, 1785. Reference: U211a5 act 83. Subject: Lease.

Arie extends the lease on 4 morgen meadow for Fl 71 and 6 years. The lease is signed by Anthonia Adriana van Rijnberck, widow of Pieter Kelffkens, and daughter of Baatje de Waaij and her first husband. Again all taxes are for the owner. New elements: extra rent of 4 chickens a year and the tenant is only allowed to graze cows and a max of 2 horses on the land. All other conditions remain the same. This record is also the last time a living Arie Vlooswijk makes an appearance.

People: Goyert van Schaik, Cornelis van Mastwijk, Arie Vlooswijk, Cornelia Noordeloos, Anthonie de Wit. Date: December 12, 1789. Reference: U211a5 act 186. Subject: Appointment of guardian.

Arie’s brothers in law Goyert van Schaik and Anthonie de Wit were appointed guardians of the children of Arie Vlooswijk and Cornelia Noordeloos. Anthonie has died, and Goyert appoints his son in law Cornelis van Mastwijk as co-guardian. The document reveals an exact date for Arie’s death: November 11, 1785. It also contains a phrasing implying that Cornelia Noordeloos had recently died. Antonie de Wit is the
husband of Lammertje Vlooswijk, Arie’s sister.

People: Heirs of Arie Vlooswijk and Cornelia Noordeloos: Johanna Vlooswijk, Cornelis van Bentum and Engeltje Vlooswijk, Anthonij Baars and
Wijnanda Vlooswijk, Goyert van Schaik. Date: April 5, 1791. Reference: U225a16 act 45. Subject: Division of estate.

This record concerns the division of the estate of Arie Vlooswijk and Cornelia Noordeloos. Arie had been dead since November 1785. The date on this document would indicate that Cornelia died about 1789 or 1790, allowing for some time for the executors to settle issues. However, there is phrasing that would imply that she had died several years earlier: the three daughters had run the farm as common property for several years, under the guidance of Goyert van Schaik and Cornelis van Mastwijk. On the other hand, they could have been running the farm even when their mother was still alive, but unable. Another record from December 12, 1789 implies that Cornelia Noordeloos had
only recently died. Either way, the estate is being divided.

I found no record of a will, and neither did I find one appointing Goyert van Schaik and Cornelis van Mastwijk as executors, but they were the guardians of Arie and Cornelia’s underage children. The document makes clear that of the 8 children of Arie and Cornelia recorded in the Jutphaas RC Register of Baptisms only 3 lived long enough to inherit from their parents: Engeltje, Wijnanda and Johanna.

As with Wijnanda Blom’s estate, the executors organise a public sale of the full estate, but not everything is sold. I found no record of that sale, but this document gives a good idea of how things went down. Cornelis van Bentum bids on the farm and land, but the property is not sold. That bid is taken as the farm’s value: Fl 8,500. Other land, cattle and properties, some of which is indeed sold, add up to a total value for the estate of Fl 14,910/10/00. From which needs to be deducted a debt bond owed to one professor Burmannus, probably Franciscus Burmannus (a.k.a. Burman) professor of theology at the academy in Utrecht and a preacher, of Fl 4,000 that Arie had borrowed in order to pay for the land that he bought from Wijnanda Blom’s estate, which cost more than Cornelia’s share, but no such document was found. Plus Fl 1,975 in costs owed to Goyert van Schaik (for looking after the sisters and farm?), and solicitor’s costs, unpaid taxes, etc. adding up in total debts to Fl 7,604/10/00. Leaving Fl 7,316 to be divided between the 3 surviving daughters. The share of each becomes Fl 2,438/13/08.

Engeltje Vlooswijk i.e. husband Cornelis van Bentum receives the farm and all the land (62 morgen) plus some farm tools and cattle valued at Fl 10,796/16/08. He also takes over the debt bond of Fl 4,000
and pays Fl 4,358/03/03 to Wijnanda and Johanna.

Wijnanda Vlooswijk i.e. husband Anthonij Baars receives Fl 1,260/04/00 from the sale of furniture, and Fl 1,179/09/08 from Cornelis van Bentum. Johanna, underage and therefore represented by the two executors, receives her full share in cash: Fl 2,437/12/05.

These are the amounts as presented in the document, but they do not add up. Wijnanda’s and Johanna’s shares added up to Fl 4,876, which is more than the Fl 4,358 Cornelis owed them. There is no trace of the difference of Fl 518.

Either way, Cornelis van Bentum becomes the owner of a farmhouse, 3 barns, coach house, pigeon house, bakery, brewery and sheep stable, plus 37 morgen of orchard, crop land, meadow and hay land located in Nedereind, 11 morgen in common with one Bart van Zijpvelt located in Jutphaas, 8 morgen located in Galekop, and 6 morgen located in Nedereind held in fief from the House of Vianen. All told 62 morgen of farmland. Other records show that Cornelis also took over the leases on a total of 28 morgen land.

Records were found detailing how Arie acquired the 37 morgen in Nedereind, from Wijnanda Blom’s estate, and the 8 morgen in Galekop through two purchases. How he acquired the other land is unknown.
