CICOGNANI Giuseppe (Faenza, 28 February 1870 - Genoa, 11 March 1921)
Composer, theorist and organist Giuseppe , cousin of Antonio Cicognani, was born of Giuseppe and Luigia Aricarani. A pupil of Antonio, he then went on to the musical high school in Bologna, where he studied with A. Busi and G. Martucci in the period 1890-91. From 1894 to 1897 he was a maestro di cappella in the cathedral of Imola to replace L. Perosi, then from 1897 he held the same position in the cathedral of Alessandria and taught in the local music institute. In 1905 he was nominated for a teacher teacher competition in the "N. Paganini" high school of music in Genoa and at the same time he was organist and director of the noble chapel in the Basilica of S. Ambrogio.
He composed the plays: Il figlio del mare (libretto by L. Orsini, Venice, La Fenice theater, 1 March 1908); Abenthamet in one act (not represented); Valeria in four acts (not represented); Thea in three acts (not representing); Theodoric in three acts (not representing); the operettas for children (represented at the Salesian oratory in Trieste): Fior di martirio (libretto by M. Bernardi, 27 December 1913); Christmas of gold (libretto by M. Bernardi, 6 January 1914); The lost way (libretto by L. Orsini, February 8, 194); The legend of Arlecchino (libretto by Alberto da Torino, May 1920); The grandfather's snuffbox (4quadri by F. Marucchi). Composed for orchestra: Symphony in D major , the symphonic poem The song of love , the suites Vita di montagna and the Romagna Apennines ; Spring morning, Summer noon , Autumn sunset (impressions for orchestra on a text by L. Orsini); The triumph of the Christian idea , overture for choir and orchestra. Author of various theoretical works, including a treatise on harmony and one on counterpoint, both unpublished, he composed vocal chamber music, pieces for violin and piano, a major quartet in mi. for strings, piano pieces and sacred music.
