BIOGRAPHY: Notes for Bessie Pilcher
Etta sent a birth announcement to King in Crown Point on the occasion of Bessie's birth. Bessie got her name from her father's brother-in-law, Andrew Trimble. Andrew sent a card immediately upon the birth of the new baby addressed to Bessie Pauline Pilcher. Frank and Etta kept the Bessie but passed up the Pauline part. He wrote Frank and told him that his new daughter had to be named Bessie Pauline, apparently after Andrew's late wife Bessie (Sarah Elizabeth Pilcher Trimble, died 1890). Norma always wondered why her father would let his brother-in-law, 20+ years his senior, name his daughter. But he and King, Andrew's son, and thus Frank's nephew about 13 years younger, were very close, so it would make sense that Frank would want to honor them in such a way.
Letter from Nellie Lyford to Carrie Trimble Ellis, Mar 26, 1911: ...Bessie is not so robust [as Norma] but a real pretty baby, and if it wasn't for the colic, a very good baby... Etta and I went to the matinee. She went home afterwards. Found Bessie had been crying nearly all the time she had been gone..."
A 13 Apr 1911 letter from Frank to King says "I wanted [Andrew, enroute from Greene to Crown Point] to see the little one (Miss Bessie). I call her 'Peaches and Cream.' She took a tumble out of her buggy yesterday. Sounded like a rubber ball striking the floor."
5 Feb 1916 letter from Etta to Hilma: "...Bessie began kindergarten Monday and likes it very much..."
12 Mar 1937: Bessie sent a humorous article about woodworking to Norma Oram at 3240 16th Ave So., Mpls. [possibly because Stan had the hobby?/CP]
Bessie was a bit of an adventuress. She always wanted to take flying lessons and actually did so, apparently getting to the point of at least landing an airplane. Judy says that she recalls seeing her mother's flying log book, and thinks that her brother Stuart may still have it. Libby Trimble recalls Bessie coming to visit in Crown Point as a teenager or young woman. They went "midnight swimming" and dated local boys. Norma wrote in 1961: ...Bessie visited King Trimble's
home in New York in 1935. She came back steeped in ancestry. I remember her speaking of going up 'under the eaves' going through old trunks. She was very impressed with her visit, but I don't remember if King was living at the time or not...
Died of post-partum complications. She actually had what the doctors diagnosed as ulcerative colitis, with a pulmonary embolus being the immediate cause of death. Had gone to Crown Point, NY to visit Elizabeth Pilcher Trimble Skinner during her lifetime.
