BIOGRAPHY: George Anderson Specht
By Martha Specht Corsi, Florence, Italy
George was born in Springfield, Minnesota in 1899. His grandfather, John Specht, built a ferry on the Mississippi, north of Dubuque, called Spechts Ferry, which is now a historical landmark. At the beginning of the century, his father Frank, bought lands in North Dakota which they farmed. George, as a child, made friends with the native American families of the area who gave him the objects now exhibited in the American Corner of the little museum inside the Castle of Porciano.
George graduated from law school from Carleton College, Minnesota. To support himself while studying, he worked at the schools cafeteria washing dishes at night. He had two sons, Robert and Donald, with his first wife of Polish origin. He worked as a lawyer during the Great Depression in 1929. He was instrumental in founding the Allstate Insurance Company and was also the legal consultant of the group that formed United Airlines in 1930. In the forties, he worked as a life insurance agent excelling in his field. He, together with a partner, developed a residential area of Minneapolis for which he personally designed various homes and followed their construction. These homes were then used as models for future development.
In 1942 he enlisted in the American Army with the rank of Captain. During the North African campaign, he worked with General Pattons group. During the invasion of Anzio (central Italy), he operated in General Clarks group, working in the intelligence with the objective of studying the enemys strategies and movements.
At the end of the war in Italy, he met his second wife, Flaminia Goretti de Flamini whom he married in 1946. They had a daughter, Martha, who is now the owner of the Castle of Porciano.
His wife Flaminia inherited the Castle in the fifties in a state of abandonment and ruin with only three meters of land surrounding it. The lawn presently in front of the Castle was not part of the inheritance and was acquired later. For many years the Castle remained in a desperate and dangerous state of disrepair until restoration began in 1963. For many long years, George and Flaminia worked to recuperate and restore this splendid example of a medieval fortified home. They sacrificed most of their patrimony to fund this project, notwithstanding a partial contribution from the Ministry of Arts and Historical Sites.
Unfortunately, after so much hard work and dedication, George was never able to see the Castle fully restored. He died in 1973 and is buried, along side his wife, in the small cemetery in the village of Porciano at the foot of his beloved tower.
