Enlisted in the Continentals as a private in Captain Mathew Ramsey's Company, Lt. Col. Hebane's battalion of the 9th North Carolina regiment commanded by Col. Clark, on March 10, 1777, at age 16. In the winter of 1777-1778 he was at Valley Forge. He was trained by Baron Von Steuben, and was in a saluting acquaintance with LaFayette and Washington.
Volunteered for service in Captain Bowman's Company of Light Infantry under General "Mad Anthony" Wayne. Participated in the surprise attack at Monmouth on June 28, 1778.
On July 15, 1779 he was with General Wayne's troops when they stormed the fort on the Hudson at Stony Point at bayonet point. Not a single shot was fired by the Americans as they captured the fort.
He rejoined Col. Clark's Regiment and returned to the south. Where he was next reported in the garrison at Charleston Couth Carolina where he was honorably Discharged on March 15, 1780. However, further documents read that "on the Sabbath after the battle at Guilford's Court House", (March 15, 1791), he was married to Rachel-------, " Rev. Ellison Davis, Baptist Minister, officiating.
He was granted a large tract of land in Davison County, Tennessee on the west side of the Cumberland river, this he assigned to John Devers and moved to Cherow District, South Carolina. In 1795 he moved to Sumter where he acquired extensive holdings of land. He appeared before his nephew Nicholas Jr, at the time Justice of the Peace of Sumter Counting, in 1818 to make and affidavit with his brother Nicholas that his younger brother Aaron had served in the Revolutionary War and was deserving a pension.
