A conjectural genealogy traces the family only to 1604, the the brothers' grandfather, Richard Middleton of London (died c. 1654). This Richard owned a number of properties in and about the city, indicating a certain degree of financial and social standing. The fact that his daughters and granddaughters -- in an age of arranged marriages and dowries -- married well, also underlines the family's status. (Evidence suggests that one of his daughters may have been the second wife of General Edward Whalley, Oliver Cromwell's cousin and supporter.) Richard's son, Henry, apparently was a minor functionary (serjeant-at-arms) under both Charles I and Cromwell, serving in the post more than twenty years.
