Judith left France with her mother, Magdalene and two brothers, Pierre (eldest) and Louis about January, 1685 before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (in October 18, 1685). The fled because of persecution that proceeded that event. It took them nine months, in all, to make the trip to Carolina, arriving in 1685. She went to Jamestown, South Carolina, known as " French Santee", and worked in the fields 8 months to repay her passage from Bermuda. Louis died there from "the fever". The receipt for passage for Judith, her mother, (who died enroute) and brothers was made out in London and dated 27 April, 1685. They were stranded in Bermuda while the ship was repaired of damage from a great storm and and also because the ship's captain was arrested. The Gitton family came previously (1870) from the small Rhone River town of " La Voulte" in the South Eastern part of France. The original Jamestown no longer exists, there having been no remains of it as early as 1900. The present Jamestown is at another site, not on the Santee River as the original was.
