Major John Boone came to South Carolina's shores with the first group of English settlers, known as the "First Fleet." As a Lord Proprietor's deputy, a member of the Grand Council and of the vestry of Christ Church, Major Boone, as well as his brother, Joseph, was heavily engaged in colonial politics. For many years the Boone's were one of the state's most influential families. As their activities are followed in public and ecclesiastical records, they are recognized as a family with strong ties to their native England, but who later developed a deep and sincere loyalty to their new country. A learned family, the Boone's fought publicly for the equality and privileges the colonists so passionately desired. John Boone married Elizabeth Patey, daughter of Edward Patey, who was the son of Theophilus Patey, and Elizabeth Gibbes, who was the daughter of Thomas Gibbes. Elizabeth had a brother, Edward, and a sister, Martha, who was the wife of Joseph Tattnall. John Boone's daughter, Sarah, married Andrew Rutledge. John Boone's granddaughter, Sarah Boone Hext, married Dr. John Rutledge they became the parents of two of South Carolina's most noted sons: Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and John Rutledge, first governor and only President of South Carolina. When Sarah Boone passed away in 1743 she was buried beneath her pew at Christ Church. Another Boone grave is located in the Christ Church cemetery. Captain Thomas Boone lies buried beside the magnificent oak avenue he planted.
