William's birthplace is not known, but he was already a resident of South Carolina when he went to London in 1775 as a candidate for holy orders as a priest of the Church of England. He was ordained by the Bishop of London to be Rector of Prince William's Parish, South Carolina.
During the Revolution, William espoused the American cause and became an active patriot, and loaned over 27,000 lbs. to the government of South Carolina.
William served the church at Sheldon, which was burned by the British, and also the Chapel of Ease. He served the St. Helena Parish Church at least twice, and was Rector there at the time of his death.
Between 1775 & 1777, William married Sarah Fripp Evans, widow of John Evans. They had daughters Ann, Martha and Catherine, and a son, Thomas
