Couturier - kuh-TREH-uh South Carolinians make three syllables of the four-syllable French. It was a Huguenot surname, and is preserved now among descendants as a first or middle name. Couturier Street in Eutawville (near Lake Marion in Orangeburg County) is named for the plantation owner who resided there. Couturier Lake in Berkeley County is also named for the early settlers. descendants who bear the name include Harriet Couturier Thomas Ulmer of Columbia, Couturier Stedman of Charleston, and Harriet Couturier Gaillard of Eutawville. Pages 27-31. Petition of Joseph Couturier of St. Stephens' Parish, one of the sons and devisees of his father Daniel Couturier, deceased, sheweth that the said Daniel Couturier died owning a tract of land in the parish aforesaid containing 337 acres or thereabouts, that t he said Daniel Couturier in his will dated 3 Sept. 1744 didst amongst other things devise unto his four sons Joseph, Daniel, John, and Isaac all his lands to be equally shared. Now since the Decease of the said Daniel Couturier, Daniel (Junior) one of the testators sons is also Deceased, whose share descends to the remaining three sons.
