Michael Messinger, Sr., was born in Europe, 10 November 1719. He came to America with his father Johannes on the ship “Johnson” from Rotterdam , arriving on 19 September 1732. He settled in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, where he bought a tract of land in 1743 in Palmer Township from the Penn heirs.

He married Catherine Abel in 1743. Among their children were Philip, born 21 June 1750, and Michael, born 31 March 1759.

In 1785 he was taxed on 370 acres of land, 3 horses and 3 cattle in Forks Township, where he was living at that time. He died in Forks Township on 24 October 1791 and is buried in Arndt’s and Messinger Cemetery in Forks Township.

Michael Messinger, Sr., was a member of the Committee of Observation in Northampton County during the American Revolution.

**Note**: There have been several possible links proposed to records in Germany (dating back to the mid 1600’s), but thus far we have been unable to locate the birth record for Michael Mössinger. He is supposed to have been born in Basel in 1719. Further investigation of church records in needed to see if the connection can be proven.

Origin of name: The name was originally “Mössinger” in German, and was changed when the family arrived in America because in the dialect of German the family spoke the name sounded like “Messinger” to the English authorities. The name is most likely a habitational name derived from Mössingen, a town in the Tübingen district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Just like a “New Yorker” is someone from “New York,” a “Mössinger” is someone from “Mössingen.”
