Minister, scientist, naturalist, author and educator. Little is know of Bachman's early education, but it is known that he attended William College in New York. On the eve of his graduation he suffered a lung hemorrhage, but he soon recovered and began the study of law. He soon realized that the religious ministry was his actual calling and would complete his education and ministry in the Lutheran Church. By 1813 he was licensed by the Lutheran Synod of New York. Because of his previous health issues it was suggested that he seek a friendlier climate. About the same time St. Johns Lutheran Church in Charleston had inquired of the New York Lutheran diocese concerning a replacement for their pastor. They advised Bachman of this opening and due to his health he agreed to accept this ministry. He began his pastorship in Charleston in 1815, and a year later married Harriet Martin. He became a close friend of the naturalist and artist John J. Audubon who he met on a street in Charleston in 1831. They would become lifelong friends due to their mutual interests in natural history.
