Capt. John Clapp was an early land holder in Charleston, South Carolina. His name is recorded in land warrants for Charlestown dated 18 October 1680, Dec. 1681, Jan 1681/82, March and Aug 1682, and Feb. 1683/84. Capt. John acquired a plantation called "Westpenhea" on the west side of the Ashley River, another on James Island, and a third on Cooper River. John Clapp remained in Charlestown as a merchant and planter until 1687. Retaining possession of property in South Carolina, he then moved to New York. According to Ebenezer Clapp's family history: "tradition tells [a child] came near being caught by an alligator in South Carolina, an accident which induced the family to remove to the less barbarous settlement of New York."
