According to family legend, Robert came from a well-connected family in Paisley-on-Clyde, near Glasgow, Scotland. He emigrated to the United States as a young man and settled in the Beaufort area. He owned a plantation in Prince William Parish. He later moved to John's Island for several years before settling permenantly in the city of Charleston. He was a Factor, and was later in partnership with his son, Robert Ewing Brown.
Robert married Catherine Graham in Beaufort, South Carolina on January 22, 1800. They had six children: William Graham, James Mair, Robert Ewing, John Fripp, Isabella (Chapman) and Martha (Shackelford).
