John Gibbs born 1647, died 1693, Son of Col. Robert Gibbs and Mary Coventry his wife, who emigrated to Barbados on assignment of the British Govt. in 1648. He, with his brothers Basil, Thomas, and Robert came to the Carolinas with the "Adventurers" under the Yeoman Agreement. His parents remained at Overhills in St. Andrews Parish Barbados, called the Scottish Highlands. Robert Gibbs, son of Stephen and Jane, was born in Elkmstone in Kent in 1594. He was a gentleman of large means and good education. He composed part of the Council Board of the Barbados and in 1638 is listed as owner of more than 10 acres there.

John Gibbs married twice--Margaret 1659; his second wife Elizabeth married him in 1661 before he went to the Carolinas. A deed of sale of land signed by them both was signed before John Yeomans on Feb . 19, 1661. He left with his brothers for the Carolinas in 1664. Basil and Thomas returned home. Robert became Governor of South Carolina.

(Note: He does not call "Col. Ludwell" Gov. as Ludwell claims this title.)

Col. John Gibbs doth publish and declare that Philip Ludlow is a rascal and imposter and ursusrper all which shall be justified in England and if any (Y) Boldest Hero living in this or the next county will undertake to justify the said Ludwell's illegal, irregular proceedings let him call upon me with his sword and I will single him out and go with him into any part of the King's Dominions and there fight with him in this Cause as long as my eyelids shall wagg. I therefore warn any person s to keep the King's peace and not pressure to actor do by virtue of any commission if Power whatsoever decreed from ye above Ludwell as they will answer it at their utmost peril. I am wiling to pass by all hitherto if ye now deputies will consult with me to prevent consequences. I am willing to receive them or a messenger with respect at my homes at Paspatouk or Corotuck. Not that I carry any but defensive arms in vindication of my Oath and Right which God willing, I will maintain till Death. Further I proclaim him that he a Tatler against the truth of this matter to be a villian and a coward that will not give me a meeting to dispsute it with sword in hand. As God is my Judge I hate a base advantage and I never did design against a man's life cowardly. Soe as I never did nor will wrong ye Lords Proprietors or Country they shall note me if possible.
