Joseph was a planter on James Island, South Carolina like his father. He also was a builder of houses in Charleston and boats at Dill's Bluff on Dill's Creek, which flows out of James Island into the Ashley River when the tide is right.
He built a house when he married in 1758 for he and his wife and line it with Prices Alley which was a causeway across Vanderhorst Creek. He also built another house on this property, which he squared with the street. The Dill House was a small but handsomely finished town house, and was part time occupied by the family with the country property. This house is now (1967) No. 6 Prices Alley.
Will dated 26 December 1794, proved 22 March 1796.
