James Gready was the patriarch of present day descendants in South Carolina. It is not known when he arrived in S.C. and in particular Charleston. He was not listed as an emigrant to the colony of Georgia along with his younger brother John Gready who joined the colony in 1732-1733.The name James Gready appears in a book published by Murtie June Clark, 1986, "Colonial Soldiers of the South, 1732-1774." In this book she compiled a list of Oglethrope's soldiers. James Gready was listed as a member of Col. Gooche's Regiment of Americans. This listing included their "particular pretensions and station before joining said regiment. "Ensign Gready: He was a gentleman of good estate in Ireland; but having met with misfortune was obliged to dispose of it; he went as a volunteer to Jamaica on an expedition; was made an Ensign on the recommendation of Col. Martin. The General gave him a good character rating."
We know that James Gready was stationed at Fort Frederica, located on St. Simon's Island, off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia. Fort Frederica, built in 1736, guarded the Georgia Colony's southern frontier against the Spanish. The regiment at Fort Frederica was disbanded in 1749 when the Spanish were no longer a threat. We do not know what happened to James Gready after his regiment was disbanded in 1749. We know that John Gready, his brother, spent considerable time in Carolina, resulting in being censored for neglect of his property in Savannah. Eventually John and family took residence in Granville County, Carolina on St. Helena Island. It is surmised that James Gready also moved up the coast to Carolina. There are no records that he ever owned real estate in the colony of Georgia.
During the Revolutionary War, James Gready was probably a non-combatant due to his age. The British captured Savannah, Georgia in December 1778. The city of Charleston surrended May 12, 1780. The war ended in October 1781. When James Gready married Judith Postell in July 1781, Charleston and territory all the way to Savannah was under British control. Since James Gready was born in 1704, he was 77 years old when he married Judith, which probably explains why he had freedom of movement. In Charleston he operated a Saddler's Shop at 85 King Street, a trade he probably learned in the army.
