Lieut.-Col. John Laurens, born 28 October, 1754, a gallant and brave officer, aide-de-camp to General George Washington; fought duel with General Charles Lee; in 1781 sent by Washington to France to obtain aid for Colonies, which he effected in a signal manner. He received sword from Lord Cornwallis at surrender of Yorktown, 17 October, 1781, and met his death during skirmish on Combahee River, 27 August, 1782.
