Records indicate that our earliest idenNote
Records indicate that our earliest identifiable Hartzell ancestor, Jacob Hirzel, was baptized in Reformed Church at Pfaeffikon in 1581. We believe it was this Pfaeffikon (a few miles east of Zurich, not the one sounth) as Hirzels were known to be farmers in the area of Winterhur, about ten miles north of this Pfaeffikon.

The village of Hirzel is located 19 miles south of Zurich, Switzerland. It is from this village, it is stated on good authority, Hirzel families migrated to Winterthur and Pfaffikon, villages about 15 miles apart, north and east of Zurich. There is a record of a Jacob Hirzel born 1580, Pfaffikon. It appears that his ancestors lived in the Cantons of Switzerland for centuries before his time. . ."The birth of Jacob Hirzel in 1580 Pfaffikon, is recorded in what is believed to be the first Church Register, after the Reformation, in that parish. He married Madalen Keller. Of their sons, hans Heinrich, baptised 1619 married Maria Steiner ( whose mother's maiden name was Maria Frey)." provided by Mrs. Ruth E. Johnson 8942 NW 35th, Silver Lake, KS 66539. "For the village of Pfaffikon, the earliest records are from 1597, and are stored in the Archives of Zurich. Because records before 1597 for the village of Pfaffikon are missing, it is not possible to know the parentage of Jacob or to know the names of his brothers and sisters."--New Orleans Genesis, April 1984. "The name Hirzel is very well known in Zurich, where eleven of them have served as the burgermeister or mayor. There are several volumes of history and genealogy published on the prominent Hirzel line in Switzerland. At least one of these is in the library at SLC. It is in German, and takes the geneaology of the Hirzels back to the early 1300s. The Herzel geneaology is painted on the wall of the family that visited in Zurich, plus the fact that they have several books on the family. The point is that the Hirzel family is known to be connected with Pfaffikon".--Richard Hirzel
