GenServ Report Output: vitals 20 Oct 1997 Henry PAWLING , THE EMIGRANT (446), born Padbury, Bucking- hamshire, England, died 1692, Marbletown, Ulster Co., NY. SOURCE NOTES: He came to America on the ship Bantekoe probably from Pad- bury, Buckinghamshire, England. Henry came in the Duke of York expedition. He received a land grant of 1000 acres from William Penn in Providence, Philadelphia, PA. He was a captain and served under Colonel Richard Nicholls to protect Kingston, which was known as Esopus or Wiltwyck prior to Sept. 1669, from the In- dians. Kingston was the first capital of the state of New York. In 1670 he was appointed captain of a foot company to protect Marbletown and Hurley and Wilwyck. In 1676 he signed a petition for a minister to be able to preach in English and Dutch. He was a member of the Governor's Council levying and collecting taxes. He purchased 7,000 acres of land in Duchess Co., NY which became known as Pawling's Purchase. He also received a grant of 1,000 acres in Philadelphia County which would until the Mennonite Zieglers with the Pawlings. Eventually hr settled in Marbletown, NY where he raised his family and died in 1692. From 1685-1689 he served as high sheriff of Ulster Co., NY. In 1689, he again aided against the Indians. Pawling, NY was named after his son, Albert. Married 3 Nov 1676, Hurley, Ulster Co., NY, Neeltje ROOSA (447), born about 1653, Herwynen, Gelderland, Holland, died 27 Aug 1745, Marbletown, Ulster Co., NY, daughter of Albert Hey- mans ROOSA (448) and Weyntje Ariens DE JONGE (449). Children of Henry PAWLING , THE EMIGRANT and Neeltje ROOSA: 1 Jane PAWLING (496). Married Jan COCK (501). 2 Wyntie PAWLING (497), born 20 Jul 1679, died 1703. Married Richard BRODHEAD (502). 3 John PAWLING (444), born 2 Oct 1681, died Jun 1733. SOURCE NOTES: John was the first of the Pawling family to claim the 1,000 acres which has been granted to his father. He and his wife, and his brother, Henry, settled at the junction of the Schuylkill River and the Perkiomen Creek, 10 miles north of Norristown. Pawlings Bridge and Mill were old landmarks in this area.. being the site of the American encampment during the Revolutionary War. The mill was sold in 1755 and became the Pennypacher's Mill. The Pawlings became one of the largest landowners, and in later years, George Washing- ton visited the Pawling homestead. He was a Lieutenant. He moved his fami- ly to Pennsylvania and settled on his father's grant bought from William Penn in 1681 and adjoining lands of his brother John. This land was at the junction of Perkiomen Creek and Schuylkill River. He was a yeoman and was prominently con- nected with St. JamesPerkiomen Church and is buried in the churchyard. He left no will; his widow and is son Henry were appointed administrators of his estate. His third child was Elizabeth. Married Richard HULL (598). 3 Elizabeth PAWLING (391), born 22 Mar 1718, Kingston, Ulster Co., NY. SOURCE NOTES: She settled with her husband on the property left to her husband by his father's will in Tredyf- fin,, Chester Co., PA. Richard was a vestryman at St. James Church, Perkiomen in 1740. In 1760 Elizabeth and Richard sold their farm and bought a farm of 251 acres for 650 pounds in Whitehead, Chester Co., PA. They lived on this farm until 1755 when they sold it in two parts: one to Ezekial Leonard and the other to their son John Bull. Dur- ing their residence in Whiteland, Richard is named in the church records of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He was a vestryman 1763-1771 and in 1775 subscribed 76 pounds for building of pews in the gallery of the church. Soon after this they moved with his sons Henry and Willian to Raccoon Valley, Cumberland Co., PA where they bought a track of land and built a log home that was standing until 1903.
