[Br'c3'b8derbund WFT Vol. 7, Ed. 1, Tree #0812, Date of Import: Nov 25, 1997] !In a family newsletter, Leona Brown wrote of Maxson: "Amid cranberry bogs and saltwater marshes, (on land that his grandfather deeded in 1790 to his father Thomas) Maxson Brand was born in 1794. He grew to manhood learning to mend shoes and do carpenter work along with farming. He and his brother, White, and sister Leticia (Letty), were minors when their father died in 1813. Maxson fell in love with a young girl whose family had been in Monmouth county for a generation. Her name was Ann Liming. They were married in 1817, and settled down to raise a family. Joel, William, Margaret, Gilana, Richard and Rebecca, were all born before 1825. When Richard was about 7 years old, Ann died. Maybe it was this tragedy in his life that brought Maxson away from his boyhood home and into Ohio. Between 1829 and mid 1830, Maxson remarried and moved to Richland Co., Ohio. The family farmed and became acquainted with the neighbors. Maxson Jr. was born in 1834. Shortly after, his mother died, perhaps even at his birth. Nancy Hostin and Maxson were married in 1838. The children also began to find mates and form their own families. Maxson and Nancy went east to Ashland Co., while Joel and William went west into DeKalb Co., Indiana. Richard and his wife Mary Jane, stayed in Richland Co. where her family lived until 1854 or 1855, when they all moved to Paulding Co. By 1860 Maxson had moved to join his sons in Indiana. Nancy had died and he had married a woman named Marion from New York. They had Maxson's two teen-age grandsons living with them. The family had found the place to put their roots down again. Richard lived in Paulding Co., Ohio and the other men lived in DeKalb Co. Actually they were only 50 to 60 miles apart. Marion too died shortly after 1860 and Maxson married in 1862 Sophia Erskins, a widow with four minor children. In 1865 their daughter Lucy was born. Maxson died that same year. He is buried in DeKalb Co., far from his oceanside birthplace. Thus ended a life of pioneering, hard work, and I'm sure, happy times as well as times of sorrow." Maxson is named in his father's will in Monmouth County wills file #9008. In the 1830 Census of Wayne Co., Ohio, he lived in the Richland township. In 1840, he lived in the Clear Creek township of what was then Richland County, Ohio. In the 1850 Census of Ashland Co., Ohio, Maxson was living in the Clear Creek township (#82). In 1860, he lived in the Union township (#316) in DeKalb Co., IN. In the 1870 Census he left a widow in the Jackson township.
