Remembering Dottie KittrellBy William SmithNavarre Press
Submitted photo Dottie Kittrell poses with husband Bill in a late 1990s photo. Bill Kittrell died soon after this picture was taken.
Angels, hanging from a small ficus tree, are the first things you see when you enter Dorothy Kittrell’s house in Midway. The house itself is spacious, with coral and pastel colors throughout the interior.
“Pastor John (of Gulf Breeze Calvary Chapel) described the house as ‘pink everywhere,’” said Tracee O’Nan, Kittrell’s daughter. “She decorated every room by herself. I stopped counting how many angels and sheep she’s collected and has in the house.”
Dorothy was “Dottie” to her friends and family. Recently passing away at the age of 70, she left a large void in their lives. Dottie and husband Bill moved to Midway from Memphis, Tenn., in 1993 after they both retired.
More than 22 award plaques decorate Dottie’s office, mostly from Armstrong United Moving and Storage in Memphis. “Mom was the first female vice president of corporate accounts in that industry,”said O’Nan. “She was a sales and marketing executive, a Toastmasters president in Memphis and worked for Welcome Wagon there.
“She also stayed busy when they moved here,” continued O’Nan. “She did the ‘Jesus’ banners for Midway Baptist Church before she began attending Calvary Chapel. She also was a past president of the Emerald Coast Woman’s Club and served in several capacities at Gulf Breeze Friends Club.”
“She was a good organizer,” added Dottie’s good friend Barbara Kurtz. “She never was at home, always busy and was the most exciting woman you could ever be around.” Dottie told her friend, Linda Cook, from the Navarre Senior Center that she kept busy because she missed Bill so much.
Bill Kittrell retired from the Navy after 22 years and died five years ago. Along one garage wall hang his plaques and against another wall, football memorabilia. “Dad played football for Navy,” O’Nan boasted. “They retired his number and the football he used when he ran the first goal-to-goal touchdown in their history.”
Out of four daughters, only the middle two are still alive. “My older sister lived in Fort Walton Beach and died two years ago, and my youngest sister, who lived in Milton, died this past September. After Dad passed, I moved here from Ft. Lauderdale to be closer to my Mom. We really bonded and became best friends. I called her everyday for my ‘five minute coffee break.’ My sister Toni lives in Gulf Breeze and we get together often.”
Purple also played a part in Dottie’s life. “When Mom got into purple, she really got into purple,” O’Nan said with a big smile. “She joined The Red Hat Society, and the first line of their charter poem goes ‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple.’ She was also a seamstress and made all of my clothes until I was 12 years old.”
Besides clothes, she made her valances, curtains and pillowcases from bedspreads, and was a member of Gadsen Methodist Crafters. “She was persuasive, too,” continued O’Nan. “She went to a flooring store for tile and talked them into selling her the rattan furniture they had on display. “During the last two years Mom really lived. She always kept going, even when she was diagnosed with her illness. She accepted the fact that nothing could be done surgically. She told me that ‘the Lord is in control,’ and in my heart I believe she knew she only had a short time,” O’Nan said.
“In her last days she said that she had looked upon the Lord’s face and he said, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ She was totally at peace when she died.”
