John C. Kittrell Jr. is a full-time working professional portrait artist who lives in Fairhope, Alabama.
A pastel specialist, his portraits of men, women and children are in collections across the country. Although he also works in oils and watercolor, his pastel paintings exemplify the highest form of portrait art, in a bold and exciting style that demonstrates the brilliant coloring and subtle gradations that are only possible in that medium. His pastel portraits have the impact of oil paintings but will stay untarnished and never crack or darken with time. He believes pastel is the most lasting medium.
Kittrell has painted commissioned portraits all of his adult life and the demand for his work has steadily increased over the years. He maintains a constant waiting list and has completed some one hundred seventy commissioned portraits in the last eight years, and many more before that.
Subjects of his portraits include Nelson Rockefeller, Anthony Cudahy, scion of the Chicago meat-packing family, and Houston socialites Margaret Hogg and Bonnie West. Among other commissioned portraits are author and motivational speaker Mamie McCullough of Dallas and corporate portraits of Grace and Walter Pilot, Pilot Corporation, Mobile.
A graduate of Kemper Military School, Boonville, Missouri, and Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Kittrell pursued art studies at these institutions and at the School of Fine Arts, University of Missouri, Columbia. He studied privately under Wayman Adams and Duane Perigo.
Kittrell's biography appears in Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in Alabama. He has served on the Board of Directors, Eastern Shore Art Association, Fairhope, and is a member of Mobile's Fine Arts Museum of the South.
