Directions: From Leesville, take LA Hwy. 8 west toward Texas. Turn
north onto LA Hwy. 111 in Burr Ferry, and go approximately 8.5 miles.
Turn right at the lumberyard onto Beechgrove Loop Road (there is a
church sign on the right side of the road). Beechgrove Congregational
Methodist Church is located .2 miles on the left, and the large, fenced,
well-maintained cemetery is located behind the church.

Tombstone inscriptions were copied in rows (north to south) from the
front gate. As burials were not precisely in rows, it was extremely
difficult to read the information in a proper sequence. Many rows were
combined, and those are so noted.

In the rear center of the cemetery there is a large area with many old,
hand-made concrete markers, approximately 6" x 18" in size, that were
typically used many years ago. Some of these stones have been replaced
by new markers, and those that remain are extremely eroded and almost
unreadable. In cases where the information was difficult or impossible
to ascertain, verification was made from an earlier version of cemetery
inscriptions (1st publication of Vernon Cemetery Inscriptions in 1978).
Inscriptions were copied 10 March 1995 by Jane P. McManus, and updated
26 September 1995. Submitted February 2001.

HISTORY

Beech Grove Congregational Methodist Church was founded ca 1850. The
exact date is not established because the first records were lost. The
first pastor was Rev. J. M. Franklin. Church was organized in 1866. It
was so named because it was located in the midst of a grove of beech
trees. There were 5 buildings, the first two were made of pine logs and
was located near Sandy Creek. These structures also served as the school.
The 3rd & 4th buildings were made from pine lumber, and the 5th of concrete
blocks. Early pastors were Sam Holiday, ? Leggett, A. J. Smith, Robert
Wright, Pinkney Daily, J. W. Ragan, & A. D. Ashby.
